ORANG UTAN FOR INDONESIAN HERITAGE

One interesting fact when discussing thematter in terms of culture of Indonesia is the country with endless storiesabout the cultural heritage it has. Perhaps no one if many foreigntourists who had come to Indonesia said that the country is made up of genes isvery strong culture rooted among the people. In fact, not just "passon" culture, a country famous for the friendliness of its people'sbehavior is now able to "give birth" a new culture that often causeclick amazed.

Language, ceremonies, customs, arts, food, even with animal species, the worldadmits that Indonesia has always been at the level of unique and interesting. Maystill be fresh in your mind how to Komodo Island is now a universal issue forordained as one of the wonders of the world. Let's see how the world isvery concerned Sumatran tiger, the Javan rhino, Komodo, Peacock, Deer Bawean, and Orangutan as one of the animals whose existence is increasingly rare. Let'ssee how the Discovery Channel and National Geograpfic repeatedly show theimportance of keeping the population of these animals.

Unfortunately, the last animal mentioned in the above paragraphs as if sinkingnow from our attention, the people of Indonesia. In fact, primates thathave a close kinship with this man is experiencing significant populationdeclines. The depletion of habitat due to land clearing and hunting andcommercial trade in orangutans, including for smuggled abroad, a major factorin animals that have similarities with the human DNA is 96% of this populationis declining.

Orangutan or also commonly called "Mawas", is a kind of great apeswith long arms and reddish or brown hairy. They live in tropical forestsof Indonesia and Malaysia, particularly on the island of Borneo and Sumatra. OrangutanThe term itself is derived from the Malay language which means "forestpeople". Orangutan includes two species, namely the SumatranOrangutan (Pongo Abelii) and the Borneo Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus).

Orangutans have strong arms, short legs and bowed, but did not have atail.Orangutans have a height about 1.25 - 1.5 meters. Weight Orangutanmales can reach 90 kg, while for females 50 kg. Like humans, Orangutanshave four long fingers plus a thumb. The soles of their feet also have anarrangement of the fingers are very similar to humans.

Orangutans used to live in dense trees and make nests of leaves. They canlive in a variety of forest types, ranging from dipterokarpus forest hills andplains, watersheds, freshwater swamp forests, peat bogs, to the mountainforests. In Borneo, the Orangutan can be found at an altitude of 500 mabove sea level.Especially for the Sumatran Orangutan, they are endemic animalsthat exist only in Sumatra. The existence of this animal is protected bythe Act No.. 5 of 1990 on Conservation of Natural Resources andEcosystems.

Because the residence is a dense forest, it is difficult to estimate the exactnumber of population. Orangutans are currently found only in Sumatra andBorneo, in Southeast Asia. In Borneo, the Orangutan population isestimated around 55,000 individuals. In Sumatra, the number is estimatedabout 7,500 individuals.

But the population progressively declined in recent decades due to lack oflowland forests and pointed out the amount of decrease in population tends tobe faster.Meanwhile, future climate change is expected to be a serious threatto orangutan conservation in Indonesia.

Let's save the orangutan population in Indonesia as one of the nation'sbiodiversity heritage. Let the government help preserve these animals asthe world's most important asset in maintaining the balance of the world'secosystems. Let's open the eyes that Indonesia has a very importantposition in the conservation of orangutans in the world. Save orangutans!
